I notice GSM and Basis Weight specifications on your paper bags, can you explain this?

GSM in the context of paper stands for "grams per square meter." It is a measure of the weight or thickness of paper, indicating the density of the paper. A higher GSM means the paper is thicker and heavier, while a lower GSM indicates a thinner and lighter paper. For example, typical printer paper is around 80-90 GSM, while cardstock or heavy paper may be 200-300 GSM or more. The GSM measurement is important to consider when choosing paper for printing, copying, or other applications, as it can affect the quality and durability of the printed material. Paper basis weight is another way of expressing the weight of paper. It refers to the weight of a sheet of paper in pounds, based on the weight of a ream (500 sheets) of a specific size of paper. For example, a ream of standard 8.5" x 11" printer paper typically weighs 20 pounds, so it is referred to as 20 lb. bond paper. Similarly, a ream of 11" x 17" paper that weighs 60 pounds would be referred to as 60 lb. text paper. The basis weight of paper is important to consider when selecting paper for specific applications, as it can affect the strength, thickness, and appearance of the final product.

I notice that the paper bags I bought from you are ripping unexpectedly. Is there any advice?

As we all get used to a world without single use plastic retail bags, many retailers are switching to paper. Although durable, paper bags do not have the same weight carrying capacity as plastic bags. Furthermore, one would never worry about the sharp corners of a boot box when using a plastic bag, but in the case of a paper bag one must be wary. If necessary, carry a paper bag like our parents and grandparents did when they went grocery shopping: use 2 hands, wrap your arm around the bottom, and be careful in how much you put in a paper bag. When in doubt, double up the bag. The famous line we remember (if you're old enough...) at the grocery checkout would be, "Would you like me to double your bags?". Paper bags can rip for a variety of reasons, including:
  • Overloading: Paper bags have a weight limit, and if you put too many heavy items in them, they can rip. It's important to make sure you don't overload the bag beyond its capacity. When in doubt, double the bag.
  • Sharp edges: Sharp or pointed objects can puncture the paper bag, causing it to tear or rip.
  • Moisture: Paper bags are not waterproof, and if they get wet or damp, they can become weak and tear easily. Colour from wet paper bags can bleed onto products, be careful when wet.
  • Rough handling: If a paper bag is handled roughly, such as being thrown or dropped, it can cause the bag to rip.Overall, paper bags are not as durable as plastic bags, so it's important to use them appropriately and handle them with care to prevent rips or tears. We test all our paper bags that we sell for durability, but once out in your store we have no control over how you use them, or how much you load them up.
